This blog is generally a light-hearted affair, but living in America is incompatible with perpetual whimsy.

For example, South Dakota just passed a ban almost all forms of abortion. The state legislature has specifically excluded any provision for the health of the woman - unless, as Digby highlights, the woman is a church-going virgin saving herself for marriage who has been brutally sodomised. (Yes, this is an actual theoretical exception outlined by Republican State Senator Bill Napoli - there's a clip of him saying it at crooksandliars.)
